First-Time Home Buyers

Do You Qualify as a First-Time Home Buyer?

Many people are surprised to learn that you do not always have to be buying your very first home to qualify for certain first-time home buyer programs.

In many cases, a buyer may still be considered a first-time home buyer if they have not owned a primary residence during the past three years. Other situations may also apply, including single parents, displaced homemakers, or buyers whose previous property did not meet certain housing standards.

You may qualify as a first-time home buyer if:

  • You, or your spouse, have not owned a primary residence in the past three years.
  • You are a single parent who previously owned a home only with your former spouse.
  • You have only owned a residence that was not permanently attached to a foundation, such as certain manufactured or mobile homes.
  • You are a displaced homemaker whose only previous homeownership was with a spouse.
  • You previously owned a property that did not meet local building code requirements and could not reasonably be brought up to code.

Buying your first home can feel overwhelming, especially in today’s changing real estate market. Buyers are dealing with interest rates, loan requirements, down payment questions, credit concerns, and different program options.

At The Assistance Group, we help buyers understand the process, review possible options, and connect with the right professionals to evaluate available loan programs, down payment assistance opportunities, and home buying strategies.

Our goal is to guide you step by step so you can make informed decisions with confidence.
